Numerical modeling of atmospheric chemical processes

Position:
A PhD position is available at the Meteorological Institute of the
University of Bonn.
Together with another Postdoc student,
the applicant will work within a common research project of the
Meteorological Institutes of the Universities of Bonn and Mainz and
the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry in Mainz.


Contract:
The research is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
It is limited to a three year period with a salary TVL 13/2.

Proposed research of the project:
Numerical modeling of chemical processes in the atmosphere is
essential to increase our understanding of atmospheric composition and
its changes induced by human activity. In recent years, global-scale
atmospheric models have been developed
that calculate the concentration and processing of
atmospheric trace constituents. However, for
key problems, e.g. local air quality and long-range transport from local
sources, the development of high-resolution models is essential.
In this project such a model will be developed.
The model will be driven by consistent meteorological and chemical
fields. This will be achieved through an online coupling of the global
ECHAM5/MESSy system with the COSMO-model of the German Meteorological
Service. First applications of
the newly developed model COSMO-MESSy will serve to investigate its
capabilities for a detailed analysis of field measurements,
the direct simulation of mesoscale chemical perturbations like dust
and biomass burning plumes, as well as an assessment and
forecast of local air quality.

Qualifications:
Diploma/Master in meteorology, physics, informatics, mathematics or
related fields.
Experience with numerical modeling of atmospheric processes.
Skills in Linux, FORTRAN, IDL or others.

An extensive number of urban land surface schemes (ULSS) have been
developed. Two new projects aim to undertake a comprehensive assessment of
these schemes.

· *Position 1* (NSF Funded) involves the evaluation of the urban
parameterization in the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model [a joint
project with Arizona State University, USA]

· *Position 2:* (UK Met Office funded) involves the co-ordination of
an international ULSS model intercomparison study [a joint project with the
UK Met office and University of Reading] (

The two posts are each available for 24 months. The post holders are
required to be highly numerate with science or engineering research
experience and programming ability (Fortran and/or MatLab). Excellent

opportunities for foreign travel. Experience in one or more of: modelling
land-surface atmospheric exchanges, atmospheric science, urban climatology,
and/or model evaluation will be advantageous.

International PhD-Programme on Earth System Science in Germany

The Earth System Sciences Research School (ESSRES), funded by the German
Helmholtz Association, offers 12 PhD-positions for outstanding young
scientists in the topical field of earth system science.

The Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven, the
Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of
Bremen, and the Jacobs University Bremen, provide a unique research
environment in Germany, bridging the gap between traditional
disciplines. The ESSRES combines observations, modelling, and data analysis
in order to understand and decipher the complex earth's
climate system and their interaction with the biosphere.


Areas of study include:

The Helmholtz Research School on Earth System Science (ESSRES) invites
suitable candidates to apply for a PhD position in our International
PhD Programme which is going to start on 1st June, 2008.

Biogeochemistry, Physics, Geosciences, Geology,

school offers a unique environment for graduate students due to the

The project presents an exciting opportunity to study innate immunity in
HIV-1 infected individuals under the supervision of Dr Martin Goodier,
Lecturer in Immunology. The successful applicant will use a range of
cellular immunological and molecular biology techniques to study innate
Natural Killer cell immunity in blood and mucosal tissues.

Applicants should possess at least an upper second-class honours life
science degree and/or an MSc. Prior laboratory experience in immunology and

A 3-year PhD position on the above mentioned topic is open at the CHEC
(Combustion and Harmful Emission Control) Research Centre, Department of
Chemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.

*Background:
*Utilization of biomass on large power plants is a potentially efficient
method to reduce net CO2 emissions and reduce the consumption of fossil
fuels. Use of biomass fuels in large suspension-fired boilers may cause
operational problems. One example is when straw is applied as fuel in
suspension fired boilers whereby severe ash deposit formation in the boiler
chamber often takes place. Improved technologies for ash deposit removal are
therefore needed.

This PhD study will deal with the development of models, experimental tools
and innovative concepts to reduce ash related problems in biomass fired
power plant boilers. The study shall be founded on solid knowledge on
Chemical Engineering and will be conducted in tight collaboration with
industrial partners. In some recent CHEC-projects both modeling tools,
advanced probes and laboratory equipment have been developed and those tools
will be available for the PhD project.

*Project content:
*The main objective is to develop methods to optimize the use of straw in
power plant boilers and to develop and verify a model of the transient
deposit formation in a boiler. Practical probe measurements on a full scale
boiler will form the basis for a mathematical model for deposit formation
taking all important parameters into consideration. Based on the results
strategies for efficient boiler operation is to be established. The project
will be conducted in collaboration with the power company Vattenfall.

The PhD-candidate will carry out the model development and conduct the probe
measurements together with technicians. Vattenfall will operate the boiler
and participate in the planning of the project.

*Five bursaries are available to support studentships* in Neurosciences,
Biomedical Sciences and Health Sciences within the School of Life & Health
Sciences. Applicants are invited from International, Non-EU students for
Research Scholarships to undertake full-time research leading to a PhD in
