Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 10:07

*URGENT*
One PhD Studentship in Corpus Linguistics at Aston University, Birmingham, UK
Available: IMMEDIATELY, until 31st July 2009

The School of Languages and Social Sciences at Aston University is offering
a PhD Studentship in Corpus Linguistics. The School's vibrant research
culture (Grade 5 rating in the last RAE) - and the rapidly expanding cohort
of full-time research students - provides a stimulating intellectual
environment.

The previous holder of this Studentship has obtained an Arts and Humanities
Research Council (AHRC) postgraduate doctoral award, hence we are able to
offer the remaining funds to another candidate, who will be similarly
supported in applying for an externally funded postgraduate doctoral award
to cover the rest of her/his PhD research beyond July 2009.

The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible, to
make maximum use of the available funds.

Candidates should have a Masters degree in a relevant subject area, and a
condition of the award is that the candidate must be willing to work for up
to 6 hours per week on the Aston Corpus Network (ACORN) project. ACORN
(http://acorn.aston.ac.uk) currently contains over 200 million words of
texts in English, French, German, Spanish, and pedagogically-oriented
software and web interfaces for language teaching and learning and
translation studies.

The Studentship consists of maintenance at AHRC rates (£12,600 for 2007-8;
2008-9 rate not yet announced) until July 31st 2009, and the waiving of
University fees until July 31st 2009 at the EU rate (£3240 in 2007-8;
2008-9 fee of £3300 is awaiting approval). A non-EU student will have to
pay the difference (c. £5-6000 per year) between EU fees and non-EU fees
(£8,980 for 2007-8).

If you are not a native speaker of English, proof of English language
competence will be necessary, usually in the form of a Test Of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System
(IELTS) test score. The minimum test scores are as follows:
TOEFL: 610 (paper-based) or 253 (computer-based) or 101/102 (Internet-based)
IELTS: 7.0 (minimum 7.0 in writing, and 6.0 in speaking, listening and reading)

To apply, please download the application form from:
http://www.aston.ac.uk/downloads/lss/Research/Research_Application_Form.doc
fill in the details, and email it to Ms Margarita Seresht
(m.seresht@aston.ac.uk) immediately.
You will also need to send a CV, a 2-3000 word research proposal, and the
names of two academic referees.
To speed up the process, please ask your referees to send their references
immediately by email to Ms Seresht.

Australia; Ph.D. Scholarships available: Effects of physical disturbances on ecological communities

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 09:30

Ph.D. Scholarships available: Effects of physical disturbances on
ecological communities

Two Ph.D. scholarships are available in the Department of Biological
Sciences at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia) for research
exploring the role of physical disturbances in structuring ecological
communities. The scholarships are available to both Australian and
international students. Students will be supervised by Dr. Josh
Madin, whose research focuses in large part on modelling the effects
of hydrodynamic disturbances (e.g., cyclones) on the biological and
physical structure of coral reef communities. Students will not be
limited to working within coral reef systems, but rather will be
encouraged to address related questions in coral reefs and/or other
ecological systems. The students will be joining a research group
that uses data from many scientific fields in order to tackle broader-
scale questions. Therefore, students will also be encouraged to work
on novel informatics techniques to aid in large-scale data integration
and analysis.

It is anticipated that students will conduct fieldwork and explore
modelling approaches in pursuit of their research questions. For this
reason, field experience and strong quantitative skills (including
mathematical modelling, computer programming, and statistics) are
desirable. Information on Dr. Madin's research interests and past/
current projects can be found at www.bio.mq.edu.au/
computational_ecology. Interested students should then contact him
and include a complete CV (including relevant coursework, research
experience, and any publications) as well as a brief summary of their
research interests. For further information, please email Dr. Madin
directly at jmadin@bio.mq.edu.au.

PhD Studentship - Computational Models of Visual Processing

Institute of Communicating and Collaborative Systems

The Institute of Communicating and Collaborative Systems (ICCS) within
the School of Informatics and the Human Communication Research Centre
(HCRC) invites applications for a three-year PhD studentship funded by
the European Research Council, starting in September 2008.

The successful applicant will work on a project that investigates the
synchronous processing of linguistic and visual information. The project
studies key features of synchronous processing by tracking participants'
eye movements when they view a naturalistic scene and listen to a speech
stimulus at the same time. The experimental results will feed into a
series of computational models that predict the eye-movement patterns
that humans exhibit when they view a scene and listen to speech at the
same time. These models will incrementally construct aligned linguistic
and visual representations, and will be evaluated against eye-tracking
data.

The PhD student will be part of a team of experts in linguistic and
visual processing, including both experimentalists and computational
modellers. The student will contribute to the modelling component of the
project, and should have previous experience in image processing,

PhD position Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 07:21

We are looking for excellent candidates for the PhD project.

Title PhD project: Intelligent Trading Agents that Facilitate Decision
Making in Multi-Agent Marketplaces using Preference Modeling

PhD supervisors: Eric van Heck, Wolf Ketter

Abstract: Modern business networks and markets are highly dynamic and
exhibit a high degree of uncertainty. Under these conditions business
managers are routinely faced with complex strategic, tactical, and
operational decisions; decisions ranging from the macroscopic (i.e.
which markets should we enter and when?) to the microscopic (i.e. which
products should be packed on which pallet?). Also customers are faced
with multi attribute decisions, such as from whom can I book a travel
under certain constraints (money, time, quality, etc)? Within this
project we investigate how learning agents may be designed to support
humans in these decision making processes. We define learning agents as
software entities that carry out some set of operations on behalf of a
user or another program with some degree of independence or autonomy,
improve their performance from experience and in so doing employ some
knowledge or representation of the user's goals or needs.

The candidate must fit in the following profile:

MSc or MBA degree in Business Administration, or Management & Economics,
or Information Management, or Computer science & Economics; Excellent
study record; International orientation and the capacity to speak and
write in English; Affiliation with the IT industry, Commitment and drive
to execute PhD research.

The Department of Technology Management (TM) offers a BSc in
Industrial
Engineering and Management Science (Technische Bedrijfskunde), a BSc
in
Innovation Sciences (Technische Innovatiewetenschappen), a BSc in
Industrial Engineering for Health Care, and MSc programmes in
Innovation
Management, Operations Management and Logistics, Technology and
Policy,
and Human Technology Interaction. Education and research in the
department
focus on the development and use of technology in a business and
society
oriented context. Research is design and application oriented, based
on
fundamental scientific insights and methods.

The sub-department of Information Systems (IS) performs research in
the
field of the application of information technology for the support of
operational business processes. Members of the group come from all
over
the world and work together in an open-minded and constructive
atmosphere.
The IS group participates in education for bachelors and masters in
the
field of industrial engineering and computer science. The ICT
Architecture
(ICTA) group within this subdepartment focuses on architectures of ICT
systems supporting operational processes in e-business and has
participated in several EU research projects on cross-organizational
process integration.

TU/e PhD Position on Mining the Product Development Process
(V39.443)
within the subdepartment of Information Systems.

The Department of Technical Management Science of Eindhoven
University of
Technology (TU/e) is looking for a PhD candidate for the research
project
"Merging of incoherent field feedback data into prioritized design
information". This project is funded by SenterNovem IOP IPCR. The
following research groups and industrial partners are involved in this
project:

Research groups:
* Division Quality and Reliability Engineering, faculty of Technology
Management, DTI / Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
* Division Information Management, Faculty of Management and
Organisation,
the University of Groningen
* Division Information Systems, faculty of Technology Management, DTI
/
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven

Industrial partners:
* Philips CE
* Oce Technologies
* Stork
* Philips PMS
* CFS
* Bakos

Project goal
Modern innovative industrial product development processes are facing
a
number of increasing and conflicting trends that strongly influence
the
industrial product creation process: (i) The continuous influx of new
technology, (ii) the complexity of the product, (iii) an increasing
pressure on time to market, (iv) products are currently no longer
created
by stable, often monolithic companies but by increasingly volatile and
dynamic international business networks.

Traditional field feedback information (e.g. service center) has
supported
development organisation to prioritize their development activities in
preventing mismatches between product specifications and customer
requirements for the product family or even for the same product
generation. However, the trends mentioned above requires such
information
as fast as possible, and much earlier in the development process.
Interestingly, mainly thanks to advances in ICT, potentially much more
information could be available for use in the development process.
User
forums at the internet, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at service,
user
helpdesk and many other, related, information sources can potentially
provide valuable decision support information very quickly. The main
problem, however, is that these data sources contain huge amounts of
data
that are often very dynamic and volatile in structure. The aim of this
project is to develop a system that has the ability to extract
relevant
information from these dynamic, incoherent, data sources and to
translate
it into valuable decision support information for use in the product
creation process. It concentrates on five primary sources of
information:
* Test data obtained during the product creation process
* Service data
* Helpdesk data
* Internet data extracted from, for example user forums
* Trade

These datasets, however, are not all collected to support product
development. Some of them are much unstructured. The fast development
of
ICT has made it technically feasible
* to extract smaller but far richer databases from those structurally
very
diverse databases.
* to identify the (consumer complaints, use, and etc. ) patterns in
different databases

Three PhD students are involved in this project:

1. One PhD student from the field of Quality and Reliability
Engineering,
concentrating on developing a new information process to provide
development with the required information.
2. One PhD student from the field of (Business) Information Systems,,
concentrating on knowledge acquisition methods to extract structural
information from different types of consumer databases into a so
called
development warehouse.
3. One PhD student from the field of Information Systems,
concentrating on
the identification and deployment of suitable mining techniques that
can
be applied to identify various patterns in the development warehouse.

We try to select a candidate for the third position. The candidate
will be
employed by the division Information Systems (IS) faculty of
Technology
Management, DTI / Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. However, there
will
be a strong cooperation between two other candidates employed by the
two
other mentioned research groups. In the project there is a great
opportunity to combine science with real-life applications on data of
the
mentioned industrial partners. TU/e is internationally renowned for
its
research in the areas of process mining, workflow management, and
process
modeling.

Requirements
For these positions we are interested in candidates a solid
background in
Computer Science or Business Management. Candidates having a
background in
data mining and process modeling (e.g., Petri nets) are specially
welcomed.

Appointment and salary
We offer:
* a full-time temporary appointment for a period of 4 years;
* a gross monthly salary of € 2,000.00 during the first year up to €
2,558.00 during the fourth year of the appointment;
* a broad package of fringe benefits (e.g. help with housing, child
care,
savings schemes and excellent sports facilities);

For more information:
- process mining: http://www.processmining.org
- Working at TU/e: http://w3.tue.nl/en/services/dpo/

PhD Scholarship in Transport & Society

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 07:31

PhD Studentship funded by Great Western Research and Stagecoach Devon
Implications of Free Senior Citizens' Bus Travel for the
Sustainability Contribution of Bus Networks

Introduction

The decision to offer free travel to people over 60 years of age on
local bus services throughout England was one of the most important
policy measures affecting the sector for years. Despite this
importance, the policy was subject to little analysis prior to
implementation. Although proving popular with beneficiaries, in the
last two years the policy has emerged as highly controversial with bus
companies and local authorities charged with its implementation and
amongst other interests in the transport sector competing for scare
public resources.

The three-year full-time PhD opportunity is supported with a
studentship co-funded by Stagecoach Devon, the principal provider of
public bus services in the County of Devon, and the South West
Regional Development Agency, through the Great Western Research
initiative. It will examine the wider implications of the policy of
encouraging additional travel in terms of the benefits over-60s
experience, the overall mix of bus passengers, the resource and
environmental costs, and implications of the subsidy for bus
regulation. In addition the success with which additional demand for
bus travel was predicted as a result of the policy will be examined.

The supervisory team brings together research experience in respect of
transport policy evaluation, travel behaviour and public transport
regulation, combining it with private sector bus industry expertise
and further public sector assistance from Torbay Council, the local
authority responsible for one of areas most affected by the policy.
The successful applicant will pursue his or her studies in a social
scientific context, working towards award of a University of the West
of England doctoral degree. The student will be a member of both the
Centre for Transport & Society (UWE) and the Centre for Sustainable
Transport (Plymouth) specialist transport research groups. In addition
s/he will benefit from the facilities of the UWE Faculty of
Environment and Technology’s Graduate School, which offers excellent
research training following Economic & Social Research Council
guidelines. The candidate will also maintain close working
relationships with Stagecoach Devon and Torbay Council.

The candidate

The successful applicant will have a broad interest in the importance
of promoting sustainable mobility and an understanding of the
importance of conducting objective evaluations of policy initiatives.
S/he will have a good first degree or Master’s degree in a relevant
discipline such as geography, economics, transport or environmental
studies. Ideally the candidate will have experience of applying
mixed-methods research methodologies and be willing to acquire
additional skills such as questionnaire and database preparation,
statistical analysis, GIS analysis, or qualitative interviewing and
textual analysis as necessary. The successful candidate will have
excellent communication and personal management skills, able to
optimise use of the specialist range of resources offered by the two
supervisors and their universities and the private and public sector
partners.

Studentship

The PhD studentship covers fees and pays a stipend for three years.
The stipend will be equivalent to the research council rate of £12,940
in the 2008/09 academic year with cost of living adjustments in years
2 and 3.

Eligibility to apply

There are no nationality or residency restrictions on applications
being considered, but the opportunity is available for full-time study
only and the successful candidate should be in a position to begin
study promptly.

Further information

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Dr Graham
Parkhurst

Further details about the research topic can be downloaded here.
