[UK] PhD Studentship - Psychology (University of Birmingham)

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 09:32

A qualitative study of British South Asian Carers' views of their Children with Developmental Disabilities

A collaborative studentship provided by Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust and the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham.

Funding is available for a three-year PhD studentship from October 2008, for a largely qualitative research project which will involve close collaboration between the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham and the Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust. The proposed research will seek to develop an understanding of the views of South Asian parents about their children, and about their developmental disabilities. A detailed, culturally-sensitive, and systematic account of these views will allow us to understand their role in shaping the care of children. The project will allow us to better understand parents access to, and interactions with, service systems. As a result, we will be able to help South Asian carers to use services more effectively, and for services to adapt more effectively to the needs of this client group.

Research supervision will be provided by Dr John Rose and Dr Michael Larkin in the Clinical Psychology team. Dr Rose has a track record of conducting and supervising research in the field of developmental disability; Dr Larkin has a track record on conducting and supervising qualitative and phenomenological research in the area of culture and psychology. The successful candidate will join a 5* RAE-rated Psychology department with excellent facilities, established research groups, and substantial external funding. The School supports around 250 postgraduate students in professional training and research degrees.

The studentship requires an Honours degree in Psychology (2:1 or above); Enthusiasm for research, and commitment to producing and disseminating excellent qualitative research; Commitment to the wellbeing of people with learning disability, and their families; Good communication and organisational skills. Prior knowledge of qualitative or phenomenological psychology would be a considerable advantage, as would fluency in at least one South Asian language.

The studentship will be at the basic UK research council rate (expected GBP 12,600 per annum) to provide support over the three-year period, and will cover tuition fees. The student may also be eligible to contribute to our paid Teaching Assistant programme.

Application

For more information, and informal discussion about the studentship, please contact Dr. John Rose (j.l.rose@bham.ac.uk) or Dr Michael Larkin (m.larkin@bham.ac.uk). To obtain the Schools Research Studies brochure and an application form, please contact Ms. Parveen Chahal (p.k.chahal@bham.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is 30th June, 2008.

[UK] PhD Studentship - New Approaches to Environmental Pollution Control - University College London

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 09:30

Approximately half of all the NOx released into the atmosphere is believed to be from vehicle emissions. NOx emissions cause acid rain, smog and respiratory diseases. Engines must run colder and less efficiently to minimise their formation. Both Otto and Diesel engines produce NOx which is removed by catalysts but for this to work, Otto engines must run at stoichiometric conditions and Diesel engines run under oxidising conditions, so no commercial NOx control catalyst is available. This project takes a new approach to NOx management using high temperature electrochemistry in which, if it is successful, the pollutant will be destroyed close to source.

We seek a candidate who is prepared to take a pioneering attitude to research, to learn new skills and techniques and to make a commitment to three years of challenging scientific research. The successful applicant for this position will join an active interdisciplinary research group in the Department of Chemistry and will work in close collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL.

Applicants must hold at least a 2.1 degree (or equivalent) in chemical engineering or chemistry or a related subject. The stipend for PhD students at UCL starts at GBP 14,988 and the studentship will start 22 September 2008 and will be for 4 years.

[France] Ph D Scholarship Innovation and Market Selection: an Evolutionary Approach

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 07:32

Ph D Scholarship Innovation and Market Selection: an Evolutionary Approach

CNRS-GREDEG, University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis, and Department for
Research on Innovation and Competition (OFCE) - SciencesPo (France)

Description of the Subject: Aggregate productivity growth is the outcome
of incumbent firms adopting new and superior techniques and (or)
entering firms replacing exiting firms with better technologies. This
research project will concern market selection mechanisms by
characterising innovation as a process of selection (or acquisition) of
more productive technologies within firms and a process of selection of
firms itself. It will analyse both what happens inside the firms and
what happens between firms on the market when firms are engaged in
innovative or imitative processes. The first part of the research will
be devoted to making a survey of empirical and theoretical analyses of
industrial dynamics, which should focus on the relation between
innovation and competition. The second part of the research will build a
theoretical model of industrial dynamics in order to analyse rivalry and
competition among heterogeneous firms. It will determine the market
conditions that allow firms to capture productivity gains from past
investments. These market conditions are critical to characterising the
dynamic equilibrium, similar to a so-called natural market structure.
The third and last part will consist in developing an empirical analysis
of the determinants of firms’ entry and exit, using French census data.
In its conclusion, this research will address critical issues concerning
the objectives and channels of industrial policies defined as policies
that support development of firms and innovation

Requirements: The successful candidate must be familiar with basic
economic modelling and econometrics (master level). Knowledge of English
is required. Proficiency in English and the willingness to learn French
are appreciated.

This is a PhD public scholarship for three years, starting from
September 2008 onwards, with an annual pay of 16,000 Euros before income
tax. The candidate will be hosted at CNRS/GREDEG and OFCE/DRIC. GREDEG
(CNRS and University of Nice Sophia Antipolis) is a research group in
industrial economics. OFCE-DRIC (www.ofce.sciences-po.fr/index-uk.htm)
is a department of the research centre in economics of Sciences-Po
Paris, a leading French higher education institution. The Department for
Research on Innovation and Competition (OFCE-DRIC), in association with
the GREDEG, studies a broad set of topics related to structural change,
innovation and trade. It has a strong emphasis on empirical approaches:
(i) for the analysis of economic performances of firms and countries
engaged in innovation processes or concerned with the entry in new
markets; (ii) for the evaluation of public policies (competition and
regulation policies, but also fiscal and banking ones). Its researchers
combine a good grasp of economic theory with various econometric methods
applied to firm and plant level datasets.

Supervisor: Jean-Luc Gaffard Professor of Economics, University of Nice
Sophia Antipolis and CNRS-GREDEG, Head of the Department for Research on
Innovation and Competition (OFCE Centre de Recherche en Economie de
Sciences-Po)

Location: CNRS-GREDEG / University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and OFCE
Department for Research on Innovation and Competition, 250 Avenue Albert
Einstein, 06560 Valbonne, France.

Application: Applications will be received no later than June 30 2008. A
master degree is required. To apply send a hard-copy of a cover letter,
a full CV, a letter of recommendation, and a scholarly work or a
research paper to:

Prof. Jean-Luc Gaffard, OFCE-DRIC, 250 rue Albert Einstein, 06560

PhD project: towards an effective and sustainable legal aid

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 09:57

PhD student
(Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week University of Amsterdam

Job description

______________________________

__

The Legal Aid Chair was created by the Legal Aid Board and
will cooperate closely with the Legal Profession Chair and the Legal Aid
Management Chair. Research conducted by the Legal Aid Chair focuses on state
financed legal aid as a policy instrument to guarantee access to justice.
Politicians, academic researchers and legal aid providers have been preoccupied
by this theme for over fifty years in the Netherlands and abroad. At a
certain point in time, the Netherlands was thought to have the best legal aid system in the world. Still today, the
country enjoys a well-established and relatively comprehensive system. However,
the ideological enthusiasm of the legal aid movement has waned somewhat. From a
business perspective, providing legal aid is considered part of state policy.
The financial viability of the system - in times of prosperity and recession -
is a recurrent and as yet unresolved issue.

PhD project: towards an effective and sustainable legal aid system

The project focuses on the issue of which system or type of system would offer
the best prospect of a substantively effective and financially viable access
guarantee to justice.. To this end, studies into a number of largely similar
and/or contrasting legal systems are in progress, focusing on how the relevant
policy and legal issues are formulated. While design is an important premise,
actual implementation is considered in drawing up a list of strengths and
weaknesses for each system.

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Program

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 06:10

JJ/WBGS Program

The mission of the World Bank Group is to reduce poverty and improve living standards through sustainable development and investment in people. The World Bank Institute (WBI) is at the forefront of the Bank's efforts to promote learning and deliver to the stakeholders, the best thinking and experience emerging from around the world on issues crucial to reform and socio-economic development.

In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP) for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank.

Through its management of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) and the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSM Fellowships), WBI supplements its training programs by providing opportunities for graduate study to promising professionals from developing member countries.

Since the inception of the Program, the Government of Japan has provided about 186 million dollars to the Scholarship Program. The Program's objective is to help create an international community of highly trained professionals working in the field of economic and social development. The World Bank and the Government of Japan require the scholars to return to their home countries on completion of their study Programs and apply their enhanced knowledge and skills to contribute to the development process in their respective regions and communities.

Starting in 1992, a number of Partnership Programs have been launched, largely to respond to the need for graduate study Programs which combine academic rigor with specialized training in the practical aspects of policy-making. The objective of these Programs is to prepare the participants for effective policy-making roles in their home countries and regions.

To apply for a JJ/WBGSP scholarship under the Regular Program, an applicant must read carefully the application procedure as outlined in documents below:

Dolphin Research - Summer Courses

Please see the announcement below. There are still places available.
Please note: further information can be viewed and printed out from the
following website: www.thebdri. com
The Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute - BDRI - offers comprehensive and
intensive Bottlenose Dolphin Research Courses (BDRC) during the 2008 Summer
Season for motivated individuals, who are seeking thorough training in
approaches to the study of free ranging wild bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops
truncatus).
We invite you to join our ongoing study of the behaviour, habitat use and
social lives of these amazing dolphins on the Emerald Coast, Sardinia Island
(Italy). These intensive educational courses provide experience in
specialized non-invasive research techniques, consisting of field sessions
and lectures. The courses will last 6 or 13 days, and - weather permitting -
we will be out on the water at least during 4 or 8 of these days
respectively.

Although our project focuses primarily on bottlenose dolphins, you will also
experience the complex Mediterranean coastal ecosystem in which we live and
work. BDRI field courses provide invaluable exposure to boat based field
work, marine mammals research, intensive training and mentoring in marine
ecology, and encouragement to work hard, have fun, and learn from the
dolphins and each other. Learning, at its best, should be an active process,
one in which the students are challenged on a daily basis with
responsibilities that play a large part in the outcome of the research
projects.
Working with us and our staff, you will rotate between tasks on land and
sea. Onboard our research vessels you will work together with our team in
search of cetaceans. To refine details of bottlenose dolphin population
biology and responses to human activities at sea, we will take
identification photos, observe behaviour, monitor vocalizations using a
hydrophone, etc.
Research courses can be used for academic or vocational purposes, but
students are solely responsible for making all arrangements for receiving
relevant credit(s) as a result of completing the training course.
BDRI's courses give an insight into the workings of a research team, and
provide experience in a wide range of areas including scientific data
collection, analysis and presentation; giving public talks and much more. To
be successful participants in this project, students should have open minds,
flexibility in changing situations, and a desire to help and to learn.
All classes will be in a form of both (a) lectures that will lead to more
"informal" discussion, hopefully ending with a constructive brainstorming on
the specific topic, as well as (b) instructions with handon practical
component, especially when it involves field techniques.
Course 1. Bottlenose dolphin: Field methods in the wild

(1st Team: 9 June; 2nd Team: 28 July; 3rd team: 8 September)

PhD Fellowships in Molecular-Cellular Biology at HBIGS

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 10:43

The HBIGS Heidelberg offers training and excellent research opportunities for outstanding PhD and MD/PhD students from Germany and abroad in a vibrant and stimulating scientific environment. The focus of the Graduate School on molecular and cellular biology takes into account that molecular and cellular biology provides the conceptual and technological foundation on which most other fields, sub-disciplines and specialized areas of life and biosciences rest - from structural biology to bioinformatics, from molecular medicine to biotechnology, and from immunology to systems biology. A higher qualification in molecular and cellular biology will, therefore, prepare graduates for leading positions in all areas where in-depth knowledge of biological processes is required - be it in academia, industry or the public sector.

http://www.hbigs.uni-heidelberg.de/main_application.html

This is a joint international call for applications to PhD projects offered by HBIGS and the Cluster of Excellence Cellular Networks: From Molecular Mechanisms to Quantitative Understanding of Complex Functions (CellNetworks).

The call will be open from March 18 to May 15, 2008. Only applications submitted via the online application system will be considered. Applications by mail or email will not be eligible.

Students who are eligible to apply have four options:

Option 1. Apply to up to three different projects (read more about the projects...) or

Australia grants work permission to foreign students

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 07:51

Starting on and after 26 April 2008, people coming to Australia to study on a student visa will automatically be granted permission to work. Permission to work will also apply to eligible family members that will stay with the foreign student in Australia.

The new rule will save time and money, as foreign students are no longer required to apply to work separately once they arrive in Australia.

Current work rights accorded foreign students will not change. Students will not be allowed to work until their studies have started and can only work up to 20 hours per week while their studies are in session (excluding any work that is a registered part of their course of study or training). During scheduled course breaks, students can work as much as they want.

Family members of the student will also not be allowed to work until the student's course has started and will only be allowed to work 20 hours per week -- unless the student is taking a Master's or doctorates course. Family members of Masters and doctoral students can work unlimited hours.

Student visa application charges will also change to take into account the new work privileges. Currently, students who wish to work are required to pay a student visa application charge of AUD $430, plus an additional AUD $60 for permission to work. On and after 26 April 2008, a single fee of $450 will be charged for the visa and permission to work.
Students who work in Australia gain valuable experience and contacts, giving them a head start on a more permanent visa if they wish to stay.

The Advanced School of Economics (in Italian: Scuola Superiore di
Economia, or SSE for short) runs two doctoral programs: one in
Economics and one in Business.

The Doctoral Program in Economics (DEC) and the Doctoral Program in
Business (DEA) emanate from the Department of Economics and the
Department of Business Management at the University of Venice. The
School coordinates these two programs, that share several first-year
courses and a common philosophy. Since 2008, the School has taken over
over the activities of a third doctoral program in Economics and
Organisation that used to be run as part of the School for Advanced
Studies in Venice.

The School is based in Venice and offers only courses at a doctoral
level. The official language is English. The current Director is Agar
Brugiavini.
