roleum_engineering

The Eni Project offers international students (in particular from
Congo, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia or
Saudi Arabia) the possibility to receive a scholarship and other
benefits to graduate from the Politecnico di Torino attending a
Master of Science course in Environmental Engineering (Petroleum
Engineering).

The project, promoted by the Politecnico di Torino and financed by
Eni - Exploration & Production Division and Eni Corporate University,
will offer for the 2008/2009 academic year up to 60 scholarship to
international students.

The length of the course is 2 years full time and corresponds to 120
ECTS credits. All the courses are entirely held in English.

The activities will begin in September 2008.

Requirements
Academic requirements
In order to be admitted into the Master of Science in Environmental
Engineering (Petroleum Engineering) program, applicants must possess
a university degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree, which
is approximately equivalent to three or four years after secondary
school, depending on the number of secondary school years.
For further information, please visit the Entry requirements page.

Application is open to students who:
are not Italian citizens or are Italian citizens who come from
foreign universities (please see the "Academic requirements" section
above)
are not older than 32 years (by 31/12/2008)
have an adequate knowledge of the English language, preferably
demonstrated by an international certification
are not already enrolled in a Master of Science course of the
Politecnico di Torino before the 2008/2009 academic year
are not recipients of other scholarships, Italian or foreign.
Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino
To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a
total of 120 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. A
plan of studies must be outlined under the guidance of the student's
academic tutor to identify, in relation to the student's previous
academic career, the courses additionally required to complete the
program of studies for the Master of Science course in which the
student is enrolled at the Politecnico di Torino. The time required
to graduate is approximately 4 semesters. However, the effective
duration is also dependent upon each student's capacity. Note also
that the time required for the compulsory Italian course, which will
begin in early September, before classes start, is not considered in
the estimated duration of the program.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their course for
its entire length (2 years – 120 credits). Students who have already
attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to
a maximum of 10 credits per year (20 credits in total). Please note
that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first
year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11
years can not be taken into account.

Scholarships
Selection criteria
Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career
and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship
The gross amount of the Eni Project scholarship is 10.000 Euro per
year (20.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is
dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which
can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the
student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission,
within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the
original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation
attached to the online form (see the "Selection outcomes" section
below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment
is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation
(residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name
of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy;
for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of
arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the
following month.
Requirements to maintain the scholarship
Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from
more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study
grant while receiving the Eni Project scholarship must promptly
notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic
performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.
How to apply
To apply, students must, under the penalty of being excluded from the
selection process:

QUALIFICATIONS, THE ONLY OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN
AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP.

An e-mail message will be sent to all scholarship recipients and
eligible applicants summarising the terms for the disbursement of the
scholarship. This message will be sent to the address(es) specified
by the students themselves on the online application form.
NEVERTHELESS, THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL
COMMUNICATION OF THE OUTCOME OF THE SELECTION.

The scholarship awardees and eligible applicants who wish to confirm
their position must take the following steps:

download the scholarship acceptance form which will be published
together with the list of selection outcomes, fill it in and fax it
to the number +39 011 090 6329 . Failure to send in
the acceptance fax within the given period will constitute a
definitive renunciation and the scholarship will be reassigned
accordingly.
upon arrival in Italy scholarship recipients must hand in the
original documentation, which was previously attached to the online
application form (see the above list), to the Politecnico di Torino.
Before handing in the aforementioned documentation, we recommend that

all the documentation in a single folder bearing your name, surname
and "Eni Project - Petroleum Engineering". We reemphasize that the
information given in the documents must correspond to that attached
to the online application form. Failure to hand in the original
documentation within 10 days from the student's arrival according to
the above conditions will result in the non-allocation of the
scholarship.
Publication of the final list of standings is foreseen for March 2008
(1st application period) or June 2008 (2nd application period).

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AFFIXING OF THE LIST OF STANDINGS TO THE
OFFICIAL REGISTER OF THE POLITECNICO DI TORINO WILL BE, FOR ALL
INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THE ONLY OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION OF INCLUSION IN
THE LIST OF SELECTIONS AND, FOR STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE
QUALIFICATIONS, THE ONLY OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN
AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP.

We emphasize that the Politecnico di Torino assumes no responsibility
for the applicant's failure to view the list of standings and/or the

University of Twente PhD studentship-Mechanical and thermal activated self healing

PhD studentship Mechanical and thermal activated self healing surfaces made of composite
ceramics for mechanical components

SELFSURF

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was
founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from
public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The
University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students
and is the Netherlands' only campus university.

The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of
Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project
"Mechanical and thermal activated self healing surfaces made of composite
ceramics for mechanical components".

Project

The project is part of a national program on self healing materials financed
by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. Self healing materials are
recognized as a new class of engineering materials with the capacity to more
or less autonomously repair internal damage.

Oxide ceramics have large potential to be applied in technological
applications for their high temperature stability and erosion / corrosion
resistance. An important limitation for application is a high coefficient of
friction when in contact with a countersurface. Besides that a high
coefficient of friction does result in energy losses, it also increases the
risk of crack growth, originating from the surface. When oxide ceramics,
like Al2O3 and ZrO2 and their composites (ZTA and ADZ), are doped with CuO,
it is very interesting to observe that a very thin CuO layer is present on
the surface after sintering and machining. Previous research has shown that
this thin layer is self - healing when a countersurface is sliding over the
surface. The project is focusing on further experimental investigation and
modelling of this mechanism, a first application of the developed materials
in valve seats of engines as well as optimizing the microstructure for
specific applications.

Currently, a Postdoc is working on the project for about half a year. His
main task is modelling of mass transport responsible for the layer
formation. In the beginning of the PhD project a close cooperation and
transfer of knowledge with the Postdoc will take place.

The PhD research comprises experimental preparation and characterisation of
the samples as well as further modelling of the contact and self healing
behaviour of the surface layer. The focus of the PhD student is on coatings
on machine elements and optimalisation of the coating for a specific
application.

The performance of the self healing composite oxide ceramic will be
quantified in a demonstrator valve / valve seat that has to perform under
heavy tribological conditions. The demonstrator applications are engines on
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and enhanced diesel engines for heavy duty
applications. This demonstrator will be developed by TNO Science and
Industry.

Profile

You have completed a Masters in mechanical engineering, materials science or
equivalent with interest in ceramics and/or tribology. You are proficient in
spoken and written English and you have well developed social skills to
co-operatively work in a research group.

NETHERLAND; PhD Studentship Tribology of Fiber Reinforced Elastomers and Thermoplastics

Written by LOWONGAN KERJA TERBARU on 06:37

PhD Studentship Tribology of Fiber Reinforced Elastomers and Thermoplastics

- Sustainable Elastomers & Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber Reinforcement
- The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was
founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from
public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The
University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students
and is the Netherlands' only campus university.

The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of
Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project
"Sustainable Elastomers and Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber
Reinforcement".

Relatively new short-cut aramid-fiber/elastomer composites show considerably
improved tribological properties, in particular cut, ship and chunk
resistance in truck tire treads. In addition, the hysteretic properties of
aramid-fiber reinforced rubber are greatly reduced, which can immediately be
translated in lower rolling resistance of tires and energy or fuel savings
of cars equipped with short-cut fiber reinforced tires. Short-cut fiber
reinforced tires are therefore very interesting as valuable contributions to
a sustainable world.

Important prerequisites for the improvement in properties of the polymers
with the aramid fibers are a strong adhesion between fiber and polymeric
substrate, respectively a favorable fiber orientation must be established
during processing, in order to prevent anisotropy in friction and wear
properties. Unfortunately, there are no general controls and experiences
available how short-cut fiber reinforced polymers of all sorts need to be
designed with respect to their tribological properties for specific
applications.

Aim of the project is to develop scientific understanding and generic models
for further development of improved short-cut fiber reinforced polymers,
thermoplastic and elastomeric. Reliable tribology test methods, against
different materials (e.g. metals and asphalt) will be used in combination
with state-of-the-art analytical characterization techniques like SEM, TEM
and surface analysis. Experimental investigations will be carried out in
parallel with the development of models to describe tribological properties,
such as friction and wear, on a micro scale, again in relation to the
fiber-matrix adhesion and mean fiber orientation.

This PhD opportunity will suit a person with a degree in physical sciences
(physics, engineering, materials science, etc.).

You will be based at the Laboratory for Surface Technology and Tribology of
the University of Twente and be joining an innovative and diverse group
working on Tribology, Surface Technology and Materials. For more information
on the research group visit www.tr.ctw.utwente.nl
