A 2-years post-doctoral position Mechanosensitive channels in plants

A 24-month post-doctoral position in the area of ion channel physiology funded by the French
National Research Agency (ANR) is available starting April 2010. The host group “Membrane
Transporters and Signalling Laboratory” http://www.isv.cnrs-gif.fr/isv/recherche/hbb/hbb.html)
belong to the "Institut des Sciences du Végétal" (ISV) located on the CNRS campus
of Gif sur Yvette, at 30 km south west of Paris.

Although plants respond
to a wide variety of mechanical stimuli, and many mechanosensitive
channel activities have
been characterized in plant membranes using the patch-clamp method, the
molecular nature of
mechanoperception in plant systems has remained elusive. We recently showed
that the MSL9 and MSL10
proteins relatives of the E. coli MscS (Mechanosensitive channel of
Small conductance) might
function cooperatively and provide mechanosensitive channel activities
at the plasma membrane
of Arabidopsis root cells (Curr. Biol., 18: 730-734, 2008; Plant Signaling
& Behavior, 3:
726-729,
2008).

The first objective of
the project is to characterize the electrophysiological properties of MSL9,
MSL10 and other members
of the MSL family (homologous system and bilayer). This part will be
done in close
collaboration with A. Ghazi 's lab (IBBMC, Orsay). The second objective will be
to
enlighten the functions
of the MSL channels as sensor of vibrations in aerial part of the plant. This
will be conducted by a
multidisciplinary approach involving, electrophysiology, molecular biology
and modelling in
cooperation with other partners of the project.
Salary ~ 2000€/month

Applicants should hold a
PhD and have a good experience in electrophysiology and, possibly, in
molecular biology. A
background in plant biology would be an added value but is not required.
English but not French
is required.

close cooperation with a team of senior and junior researchers, you will
conduct research into the dynamics and effects of such large-scale
multi-actor research programmes. There will be a focus on programs in
the field of both climate adaptation and water research. The research is
carried out in cooperation with KWR Watercycle Research Institute, Delft
University of Technology and the Free University of Amsterdam. We expect
you to prepare a PhD thesis, based on this research.

Two PhD Positions in Auditory Neuroscience

We are seeking highly motivated PhD Students to work in the program "Function and pathophysiology of the auditory system" at the Hannover Medical School, in Hannover, Germany.

The goal of our group is to investigate neural mechanisms of human auditory system by using event-related potentials (32-channel system, Brain Products). Experiments will involve healthy controls, as well as subjects with cochlear implants (CI). An emphasis will be placed on the processing of language-related irregularities as well as music perception. All studies are conducted in collaboration with the Clinic for Laryngology, Rhinology and Otology.

The research will be conducted at the Hannover Medical School (http://mh-hannover.de) in Hannover, Germany, which is one of the world's leading university medical centers. Our research and patient care set national and international standards. We are also part of an excellent regional medical network. Our outstanding success in interdisciplinary collaboration both within the MHH and with extramural scientific institutions is reflected in the fact that the MHH is the German medical university with the greatest volume of grant funding.

PhD positions:
The candidates must have a master degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, medicine, psychology, or a related field. Proficiency in oral and written English is necessary. PhD students will have the opportunity to participate in the Center of Systems Neuroscience.

Starting date for all positions is flexible (official teaching classes start date: October, 1st, 2009), but an earlier start will be supported. Scholarship will be 1500 â‚¬/months.

The research project is conducted on the intersection of theology and
science, and is part of a research programme called ?The Problem of
Divine and Human Agency in a Scientific Worldview?, in which
theological models of Divine Agency are studied in a scientific
context. You are required to develop your own personal design of a
possible research project in this interdisciplinary field. As a
postdoctoral researcher you will conduct result-oriented research on
the chosen topic in accordance with an agreement to be concluded. In
addition to project-based research your activities will involve
initiating and acquiring subsidies for indirect government and/or

The Vanderbilt Scientist-Educator Program trains postdoctoral fellows to be leaders in both biomedical education and research. During the three-year fellowship, individuals perform independent, cutting-edge research under the supervision of a faculty mentor. At the same time, they learn the practice of teaching gross anatomy, neuroscience, and cell and tissue biology. The program seeks to address the critical national need for medical educators, as well as foster the development of fellows interested in careers in academic medicine. This program is funded by an award from the NIH in the IRACDA initiative.

To address the national need for anatomist educators, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has created the Vanderbilt Scientist-Educator Program. The program aims to develop both the basic science research skills and the pedagogical expertise of individuals who desire to be biomedical researchers and educators. This uniquely designed program combines first-rate fundamental basic science research with hands-on training in medical education. Due to the urgent need for gross anatomy educators, the program has historically focused on training fellows in medical gross anatomy, however, in 2008, a medical neurosciences track was added.

Postdoctoral fellows are recruited for a three-year combined research and teaching position. Throughout the duration of the program, fellows are immersed in an independent basic science research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor with concurrent participation in the School of Medicine 's gross anatomy course or medical neurosciences course.

Support and Benefits
Fellows are compensated at the level set by the National Institutes of Health. Fellows' stipends are paid by the Dean's Office at the School of Medicine , which contributes 25% towards the expense of the stipend, and the fellows' sponsoring laboratory, which contributes 75%.

Characterisation of multi-drug and efflux inhibitor-resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important cause of respiratory and invasive infections. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. pneumoniae is increasing in many countries. Chromosomally encoded efflux pumps confer innate resistance to multiple antibiotics. In S. pneumoniae two genes encoding ABC transporters (efflux pumps) patA and patB were shown to be over-expressed in a laboratory MDR mutant selected after antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) exposure (1,2).

Our most recent work indicates that increased expression of patA and patB occurs in ~50% of ciprofloxacin and/or MDR S. pneumoniae isolated from people. Use of efflux pump inhibitors provides a promising route to combating multidrug resistance, however we have also selected mutant S. pneumoniae resistant to the inhibitor reserpine (3). However, the cause of the increased expression of these two genes and concomitant enhanced efflux of multiple substrates has not been defined.

Berkeley Labs has an opportunity for a Post Doc to synthesize and characterize electrode materials for Li-ion batteries in support of the BATT Program (Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies). This position is expected to conduct research to investigate new compounds with interesting properties and evaluate improvements of the performance of well-known candidates through the control of the micro/nanostructure of the materials using different synthetic methodologies. The BATT group is a diverse research group consisting of both theorists and experimentalists aiming to develop the next-generation batteries for use in electric, hybrid-electric, and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles.

As a Chemist Post Doc, you will:

Synthesize different compounds using both classic and novel synthetic techniques, with emphasis on those that allow the tailoring of the material at the nanoscale.
Characterize the crystal, micro and nanostructure of the materials using powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, solid state NMR, specific surface area measurements, as well as synchrotron radiation-based techniques.
Evaluate the properties of the materials as electrodes and investigate the factors that influence their performance (e.g. phase transformations, kinetic and thermodynamic properties, micro/nanostructural features) using electrochemical techniques such as cycling tests, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and spectroelectrochemistry.
Analyze and present results in the form of manuscripts and reports. Make presentations at scientific meetings and internal seminars.
Carry out collaborative research with research associates, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and students with frequent meetings and discussions.
Collaborate in the development of research proposals and new scientific initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A recent Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field.
Expertise in solid-state chemistry, especially in the synthesis of nanometric materials, crystallography and transmission electron microscopy.
Knowledge of rechargeable battery chemistry, and familiarity with electroanalytical techniques.

Mathematical modelling of self-propelled cell motion on biomaterial

Applications are invited for a postgraduate studentship, funded by the
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Global Research
Partnership [KAUST GRP], to work on "Mathematical modelling of
self-propelled cell motion on biomaterial surfaces" under the
supervision of Dr Jim Oliver, Dr Sarah Waters (OCIAM) and Dr Jonathan
Whiteley (CBG). This DPhil studentship will start on 1 October 2009, is
available to all nationalities, covers maintenance and full overseas
fees and will be based in the newly established Oxford Centre for
Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM).

OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP.
The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, will be allied
to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the
ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex
scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four
pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working
in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the
Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the
Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other
scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics
both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first five
years the centre will employ 40 new staff and students.

The successful colonization of a medical implant device depends on the
early response of the host's cells to the implant surface. The
commercial development of the next generation of devices will therefore
benefit from a more quantitative understanding of the mechanisms
involved in the adhesion and migration of a single mammalian cell over a
biomaterial surface. We have developed two long-wavelength multiphase
reactive flow models of the cell's motile machinery. The models are
based on poroviscous generalizations of the thin-film equation in
lubrication theory and of the Trouton equations in extensional flow
theory. The main aims of this project are: (i) to develop robust
numerical algorithms to solve the two-dimensional versions of these
challenging free boundary problems; and (ii) to calibrate and test their
predictions by direct comparison with data from the in vitro cell
systems obtained by our experimental collaborators.

The collaborators involved in this project are Professor David Grant, Dr
Colin Scotchford (Bioengineering Group, University of Nottingham) and
Professor John King (School of Mathematical Sciences, University of
Nottingham).

Like humans, animals too have personalities, some of them being bold
and brave, while others are shy and softy. These differences have
traditionally been explained away as noise surrounding adaptive
population-average behaviour. Recent theory has aimed at adaptively
explaining this variability. However, little is known about whether
personality affects the tendency to cooperate with others, and whether
the mixture of personality types in socially breeding groups has fitness
consequences. These open questions can best be addressed by an
integrative approach, since genetics and individual state influence
endocrine mechanisms that govern behaviour.

This four-year project funded by Academy of Finland aims to 1)
demonstrate the existence of personalities, 2) relate personality and
physiological stress response to parental care strategy and parental
quality and state and 3) explore the distribution of personalities in
cooperative groups and its fitness consequences. The model species is
the eider duck (Somateria mollissima), where females show a variety of
parental care strategies, ranging from solo care to joint care with
other females.

Fecal steroid analyses are ideal for studying hormone-behaviour
relationships. It has previously been shown that stress responses relate
to personalities and dominance. We will quantify individual quality,
dominance, boldness, activity, exploratory behaviour and physiological
social stress response, as judged by fecal glucocorticoid metabolites
(GCMs) before and after choosing parental care strategy. This defines
individuals on the "boldness-shyness" personality axis.

Field work will take place at Tvärminne Zoological Station, SW Finland,
in a long-term, individually-marked study population. The biochemical
analyses (immunoassay) will be conducted abroad. The doctoral student
will be based at Ekenäs, Finland, joining the interdisciplinary ARONIA
Coastal Zone Research Team established in 2008. The new Ekenäs campus
creates an inspirational setting for supervision and training, and the
candidate will be enrolled at Åbo Akademi University.

HOW TO APPLY

able to work both independently and in a team. The position is open from
early 2009 (with some flexibility) until the end of 2012. The thesis
work will be supervised by Dr. Markus Öst together with a postdoc. The

Because pathogens become increasingly resistant to therapeutic drugs, and due to the emergence of new pathogens, novel approaches to the treatment of infectious diseases are required. By chemical cross-linking we have generated bifunctional proteins consisting of a lectin domain and a fragment of an antibody directed against Fc receptors on phagocytic cells. Studies in vitro in our laboratory have shown that such bifunctional proteins can stimulate uptake and killing of a broad spectrum of pathogens by recognizing the microbes through the lectin domain and targeting them to the phagocytes through the anti-Fc receptor part. Your task will be to expand this work by:

1) varying the anti-Fc receptor moiety
2) developing a method for the production of the bifunctional proteins as fusion proteins
3) testing the effectiveness of the produced proteins with regard to their stimulation of pathogen uptake and killing by phagocytes in experiments in vitro. Depending on your affinity and experience, the effectiveness can also be studied in mouse infection experiments in vivo.

Modeling neuron-astrocyte metabolic interactions and their impact on
neural activity

We are looking for a talented and motivated PhD student for a
computational neuroscience project aimed at understanding the
energetic constraints of neuronal activity.

The brain uses glucose as its primary energy substrate. Surprisingly
however, neurons can also use lactate – a glucose derivative – rather
than glucose as their main energy fuel. Lactate is being produced in
astrocytes from blood-borne glucose and is then shuttled to neurons
instantiating a metabolic connection between astrocytes and neurons.
Since this mechanism was originally postulated in 1994, its existence
has been the subject of a much heated controversy. Our recent work
using mathematical analysis suggests that this lactate shuttle does
take place in vivo, is of significant importance and is regulated by
the activity of excitatory neurons as originally postulated. This
leaves open the question as to why brain energetic is organized in
this fashion. This question is being addressed in the group at the
moment using a combination of in vivo experiments and computational
modeling. With this project, we wish to open a new line of research
focusing on the role of this lactate shuttle in the regulation of
neuronal activity, a mechanism recently described in vitro.

The project will consist of developing, simulating and analyzing a
network model containing different neuronal and astrocytic
subpopulations. Energetic constraints and regulatory mechanisms will
be integrated in the network by progressively increasing the
complexity of astrocyte–neuron metabolic interactions.

Combining modeling with experiments is possible if the candidate
wishes to do so.

The Department of Psychology is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow,
who will be required to work on a BBSRC funded project investigating
the functional role of second-order processing in binocular vision,
under the direction of Dr. Ross Goutcher (principal investigator).

Understanding how the human visual system encodes binocular disparity
information is a central problem for vision research. Currently,
many computational models use binocular energy units as a first stage
to the encoding of disparity information. However, whilst the
standard binocular energy unit is sensitive only to disparities
defined by changes in luminance, human observers are known to also be
sensitive to disparities defined by second-order image content, such
as contrast modulations (e.g. Wilcox Hess, 1996; 1997). The role
that such second-order sensitivity may play in the encoding of
binocular disparity, and the benefits such sensitivity may bring to
human stereovision, are currently unclear. The goals of the project
are to establish the ways in which second-order image content may aid
the encoding of binocular disparity, and to establish whether any
such potential benefits are exploited by the human visual system.
This will involve a combination of psychophysi!
cal experimentation, computational modelling and the analysis of
binocular natural image data.

You will be responsible for carrying out a series of psychophysical
experiments, and will be required to assist in the development and
testing of computational models of second-order binocular disparity
detection. You must therefore have experience in the design and
conduct of psychophysical experiments, and should hold, or expect to
hold, a PhD, or equivalent, in Psychology, or another related
subject. You should also be conversant in the use of Matlab for data
analysis and experimental design purposes. An understanding of
computational models of biological vision and a good knowledge of the
literature on binocular vision and/or second-order vision are also
highly desirable.

The post is full-time, fixed-term for three years, proposed start
date 1st February 2009. The salary will be £28,290 p.a. (Grade 7,
Spine Point 30).

A postdoctoral fellowship (2 years) in marine bacterial biotechnology is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Aquatic Microbiology and Seafood Hygiene, with starting date January or early 2009.

DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The institute is involved in research, education and advice related to the aquatic environment. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 120 academic employees in aquatic and fisheries sciences, food technology and microbiology. The aquatic microbiology research focuses on microbial ecology, fish and human pathogens and bioactive marine bacteria.

Microorganisms and their products are valuable in food- and biotechnology being used as food preservatives, disinfectants, immunostimuli or antibiotics. Mankind has a constant need for novel antibacterial compounds as bacteria are increasingly becoming resistant to well-known compounds such as antibiotics. The Section for Aquatic Microbiology and Seafood Hygiene at DTU Aqua participated in the entire Galathea 3 expedition which circumnavigated the globe on a nine-month voyage in 2006/07. During this research cruise, the group has acquired a unique global collection of biologically active, marine bacteria which forms the core of the material for the postdoctoral project.

The project will also focus on the physiology of the inhibitory organisms, the mechanisms of inhibition (protein compounds, small molecules, nutrient competition) and interaction of specific compounds with pathogenic organisms in broth and surface systems. The postdoctoral position also represents the initiation of a stronger platform of expertise in molecular bacteriology at DTU Aqua.

The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with PhD students, other microbiologists at DTU Aqua and with natural product chemists at DTU Systembiology that are in charge of extraction of bioactive compounds and structure elucidation. The project is part of a larger collaboration focusing on the collection of bacteria from Galathea 3 and their bioactive potential. This collaborative effort also involves scientists from University of Copenhagen, University of Southern Denmark, Chr. Hansen A/S and nature&science aps. The partners study other aspects of the bioactive bacteria, such as their interaction with immune cells or their specific interference with bacterial virulence.

Required skills for the postdoctoral fellowship:

A PhD (M.Sc.) in microbial physiology, biotechnology, or molecular microbiology or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a PhD degree in microbiology
A keen interest in research especially microbiology and the ability to be self motivated
Good applied skills in e.g. bacterial physiology and ecology and molecular bacteriology. Proficiency in written and spoken English

An EPSRC-funded postdoctoral post is available in the Molecular Magnetism Group (Dr Joris van Slageren). The project will use frequency domain magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the magnetic anisotropy of single-molecule magnets and similar materials. Single-molecule magnets are very promising for applications in new data storage systems and possibly quantum computing. We aim to identify novel strategies for increasing the blocking temperatures of single-molecule magnets. State-of-the-art equipment is available, including a frequency domain magnetic resonance spectrometer, SQUID magnetometer with ac capabilities, magnetic circular dichroism and X-band EPR spectrometers.

Candidates must have a PhD degree in chemistry or physics. Experience in molecular magnetism, spectroscopy, and/or low-temperature methods will be an advantage. We study the neural mechanisms of visual perception as statistical
(Bayesian) inference. We use a variety of research methods,
including multiunit recordings in awake, behaving monkeys, fMRI in

The Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Centeris is now one of the NCI-designated Cancer Centers.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with good knowledge and great interest in cellular & molecular biology and immunology. The laboratory functions as an integrated translational research program with the goal of designing and developing new immunotherapies and immunologic strategies for cancer treatment and prevention. The project is focused on effector and regulatory molecules controlling cancer specific lymphocytes before and during immunotherapy, especially studying a negative immunoregulatory mechanism used for immune evasion in tumor microenvironment.

Ongoing studies involve (1) analysis and utilization of both characterized and newly found costimulatory molecules from the perspective of cancer immunology; (2) molecular and cellular characterization of lymphocyte-tumor cell-stromal cell interactions; (3) the discovery of antigenic determinants expressed in tumor stromal cells as novel targets; (4) the development of new animal models that can be employed in preclinical studies to most reflect human clinical trials. Although most of the studies focus on the discovery of new principles through mouse-based work, there may be potential for translating discoveries into the clinic. There also have an opportunity to gain knowledge of infection immunology by interacting with the infection research group in the center.

The project equally requires an interest in mathematical modeling and the design and evaluation of appropriate microarray experiments.

Successful candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree in a technical or scientific field and must be able to demonstrate a proven track record of implementing and applying probabilistic models. The new group member will implement algorithms for probabilistic inference in R, MatLab, or Octave. Solid knowledge of a development environment for numerical problems is hence required. Experience with data analysis in a biomedical or life-science domain would be an advantage. In this project, an understanding of thermodynamics and non-equilibrium effects may also be helpful. The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), an associate member of
the Leibniz Society, addresses ecological and socio-economic issues
related to the sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems such as
mangroves, coral reefs and sea grass beds. Research and teaching at
the Center are devoted to the structure and functions of these
ecosystems, their resources and their vulnerability to human
interventions and natural changes. The research is conducted within
interdisciplinary partnership projects with institutions and
universities in the tropics.
The social-ecological systems (SES) analysis group at the ZMT
investigates human-nature relations. Participatory approaches to the
generation of social-ecological system understanding and to the
identification of ways to steer coastal change into more desirable
directions are major foci. The SES group operates a research programme
in three coastal regions of Indonesia (SPICE Cluster 6). We are now
looking for a social or natural scientist with a strong
interdisciplinary research orientation. The post is embedded in the
two key research themes of SPICE Cluster 6 (Social-ecological systems
analysis and Governance). The research under this post should provide
new insights on the potentials of alternative livelihood options (e.g.
marine polyculture) as socially, economically and ecologically
sustainable income sources for Indonesian coastal communities. A focus
on innovations is encouraged. The field focus of this post is in the
Spermonde Coral Archipelago but the research should provide results of
wider relevance.
The position is at the level of E13 and initially funded from 1.10
2008 until 30.8 2010. Further work is envisaged. The ZMT is interested
in increasing the number of women in the field of science and
encourages qualified women to apply. Given similar levels of

Particle Theory phenomenology : beyond the standard model @ LHC The theoretical physics group at the Institut de Physique Nucléaire de Lyon (IPNL) will have a postdoctoral position beginning December 1st 2008. We have contributed to the identification of genes responsible for various types of inherited peripheral neuropathies. The identification of genes and disease-associated mutations is the first step in understanding the pathomechanisms, and opens new perspectives for molecular genetic diagnosis and therapy. Genotype/phenotype correlations guide the selection of specific mutations suitable for functional analysis in cellular systems and model organisms. One of our projects aims to study a the effect of mutations in a gene that we recently identified for Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy. The postdoc will apply molecular genetic and cell biology tools to study specific mutations. We offer an excellent multidisciplinary team-oriented research environment involving clinicians, geneticists, molecular biologists and bio-informaticians.
Profile

For this project, people's travel behaviour will be modelled using a toolbox which will be developed within a micro-simulation environment. This toolbox should enable us to calculate the effects of large-scale individualised transport simulations on a Flemish level.

The candidate is required to have strong programming skills (preferably in C/C++) and work experience in Linux/Unix OS. The candidate will take leadership in the pursuit of modifying a serial C program to a MPI enabled parallel, portable and platform independent program. Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)
A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN. The NATEC
centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter
interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal
structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for
realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The centre is
a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental
characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental
theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and
will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these
areas.

The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk (jm[ at
]com.dtu.dk) from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and
involves the collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Department
of Micro-and Nanotechnology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.

The Department of European Ethnology and the Collaborative Research Unit
640, "Changing Representations of Social Order: Intertemporal and
Intercultural Comparisons" at Humboldt-University Berlin offer a PhD
position within the research project "Kinship as Representation of
Social Order and Practice: Knowledge, Performativity and Legal-Ethical
Regulation" (Project C4, Stefan Beck and Michi Knecht) This project
seeks to understand how notions and practices of kinship / affinity /
togetherness are changing in relation to the appropriation of assisting
reproductive technologies and adoption in Berlin and Istanbul/Izmir,
with a particular focus on the emergent transnational scapes of
reproductive medicine. The position is for 4 years, open as soon as
possible, ending June 30th, 2012.

The PhD position will contribute to the Turkish and transnational part
of the project directed by Prof. Stefan Beck and Dr. Michi Knecht. The
focus will be on women, couples and kinship networks, who are using – or
have used – reproductive technologies or adoption in order to start, to
enlarge or complete families. Important sites of fieldwork in Istanbul,
Izmir and Berlin will be self-help groups and other concerned groups
within the reproductive health sector, infertility clinics, adoption
agencies, ethic committees and governmental staff and experts engaged in
redefining kinship and kinship law. Most importantly, interviews and
participant observation will take place within the everyday life of
families who are involved in our long term study.

Applicants are expected to develop, define and carry through their own
PhD research project within the research field of our project (assisting
reproductive technologies in Turkey and the emergent transnational
scapes of reproductive medicine, kinship and citizenship, concerned
groups / self help groups in the field of infertility treatment,
adoption, bioethics and regulation in the field of reproductive
technologies in Turkey) Applicants for this PhD position should have a
background in social / cultural anthropology, european ethnology or STS.

The Department of Foreign Languages at the Norwegian University of
Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim has available 2 PhD positions
connected to the research project Exhibiting Europe. The Construction of
European Integration and Identity in the Musée de l?Europe funded by the
Norwegian Research Council (NFR). This project seeks to understand how
?Europe? and the European Union are represented and constructed in
European-level exhibitions, the planned Musée de L?Europe and in
selected national (cultural and history) museums throughout Europe. The
positions are for 3 years. The starting date is 1 October 2008.

One of the two PhD positions will contribute to the first part-project
directed by Dr Stefan Krankenhagen. This will focus on the museums as
aesthetic spaces between different cultural fields: Firstly, between its
claim of presenting history and its cultural politics of constructing
memories and identities. Secondly, between ?encoding? and ?decoding?
constructions of Europeaness. And thirdly, between its history as a
space of education and its present status as a place of popular
?edutainment? and consumption as its most striking exhibition design.
Applicants for this PhD position should ideally have a background in
museum studies and/or cultural studies.

The second PhD position will contribute to the part-project directed by
Professor Wolfram Kaiser. It seeks to identify whether and how European
exhibitions and the Musée de l?Europe represent a cohesive master
narrative of EU history, and how national (history) museums have
developed and revised their representation of a common European and the
EU?s history. Applicants for this PhD position should ideally have a
background in contemporary history and/or cultural studies.

Both PhD students will spend their first year at the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology where they will have access to

Applications are invited for six PhD studentships at the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) within the School of Engineering at Cardiff University.

In order to meet the UK government target of 10% of electricity supplies from renewable energy by 2010, an aspiration to double this by 2020 and the EU target of 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020, the renewable energy sources (RES) and distributed generation (DG) will play a major role in the future.

The integration of RES and DG will pose many research challenges, especially due to changes in the current network operational and control strategies and dynamic behavior of the network. It is recognised that the future electricity network, both at the transmission and distribution level, can no longer play a passive role. The structure of the network will be highly interconnected with smaller controllable areas, with more responsive demand side loads and DGs. The application of power electronics such as FACTS, HVDC will offer the potential to manage the power flows while enhancing the controllability of the network under dynamic operating conditions. The estimation of the state of the entire and/or controllable areas of the network and coordinate control of these areas will become essential tools.

Recognising the anticipated changes in the future electricity supply system, CIREGS is developing research capacity in integrated renewable energy generation and supply, including "Smart Grids" of the future and contributing towards meeting the UK medium-term renewable energy targets.

Project: Discrimination of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

The emergence of antibiotic resistance in hospital-acquired infections represents a considerable burden to healthcare delivered globally. This research project aims to develop proteomic approaches (including MALDI-TOF-MS) for discrimination and characterisation of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Proteomic techniques, such as two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, will be used to identify biomarkers of antibacterial resistance on the surface of bacterial isolates. Candidates should have a strong interest in bacteriology and molecular biology. Laboratory based practical experience in microbiology, molecular biology and proteomic techniques would be an advantage.

Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification and catalytic applications – suitable for chemical engineers, chemists, and physicists

Funding is available for two PhD studentships in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh on two separate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) related projects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-materials science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).

Project 1: Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification

Hydrogen is a potential future automotive fuel as well as an important industrial feedstock. For fuel-cell applications, as well as in many industrial processes, high purity is required. The hydrogen required can be produced either by generating it from steam reforming or methanol cracking processes or by recovering it from hydrogen-rich process streams by adsorbing the impurities using pressure swing adsorption. Such streams are readily available in refineries and petrochemical plants and are sometimes burnt as a waste stream. The scope of this project is to design new adsorbents for hydrogen purification using computational and experimental methods. This is a collaborative project with the Department of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews.

Project 2: Metal-organic frameworks for catalytic applications

To date a large percentage of chiral compounds are synthesised using homogeneous catalysis. Although they are often expensive and their separation/recycling tedious, inefficient and time consuming, homogeneous catalysts often show excellent selectivities and high activities. However there are many advantages to using heterogeneous catalysis, such as easy separation, efficient recycling, minimisation of metal contamination, improved handling that could all result in lower environmental impact and lower overall costs. The aim of this project is to develop chiral heterogeneous catalysts based on MOFs and to study in particular the adsorption and diffusion processes involved. This is a joint project with chemists at the University of East Anglia and the University of Bath.

The studentships
The studentships are available immediately for a period of 4 years (project 1) and 3.5 years (project 2). (They are of different length because the projects themselves have different durations.) The studentships provide a tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £12,600 per annum), plus university fees at the Home / EU rate. Additional funding is available to cover the overseas fees for non-EU citizens for one of the projects.

For both studentships, collaboration between the chemical engineers at the University of Edinburgh and the partners in chemistry is a very important element and the successful candidates will spend significant periods of time at the partner institutions, learning among other things about material synthesis and characterisation. The ability to be a team player and to work in close collaboration with a team of chemical engineers and chemistry is therefore essential. The successful candidates will have a first class or 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics or a related subject.

The scholarships are for award to outstanding UK/EU/Overseas applicants and are intended to commence in the 2008/2009 academic year.

[FRANCE] Postdoc in Membrane Traffic in C elegans

A two-year post-doc position is available in our C. elegans group in Rennes, France. Our lab focuses on the physiological role of membrane traffic during development. In particular, we examine the function of the AP-1 adaptor complex which is involved in several routes of post-Golgi trafficking and in epithelial cell polarity. The developmental and cellular functions of this complex are investigated during embryogenesis and vulva formation.

The team belongs to the Institut de Génétique et Développement de Rennes (UMR 6061 http://www.umr6061.univ-rennes1.fr/english/equipes/). The quality of in-house equipment is excellent, from confocal and video microscopy to sequencing facilities.

Project: Identifying new sorting receptors
The successful applicant will develop a project based on genetics and cell biology to identify new sorting receptors. One of these elusive factors Wintless has recently been characterised, and suggests the existence of other sorting receptors. Several transmembrane proteins found in C. elegans are likely candidates to act as sorting receptors and the project consists of characterising these proteins and their intracellular trafficking.

Training in cell or developmental biology is required and prior experience with C. elegans is desirable but not essential.

The major objective is to define the transcriptional regulatory circuitry controlling inorganic carbon assimilation and determine its integration with light reactions of oxygenic photosynthesis in the experimental model Synechocystis sp PCC6803.These molecular genetic issues will be studied in context of detailed biophysical and biochemical analyses in order to connect genetic regulatory mechanisms with bioenergetic and nutrient functions.

The position will involve work in the area of optical quantum computing [Science 318, 1567 (2007)] quantum metrology [Science 316, 726 (2007), Science 318, 5855 (2007)], and generalised quantum measurements with photons [arXiv:0803.1554]. This will include the use of on-chip waveguide circuits developed at Bristol [Science 320, 646 (2008)]. The project will use photons generated via nonlinear crystals, as well as the photonic crystal fibres sources developed by Prof. John Rarity at Bristol [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 120501 (2007)].

You will have postgraduate experience in experimental physics, photonics or related discipline (please note: experience in quantum optics/quantum information science is not essential). General laboratory experience in interfacing equipment and data processing, and a willingness to supervise graduate students will also be necessary. A qualitative study of British South Asian Carers' views of their Children with Developmental Disabilities

A collaborative studentship provided by Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust and the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham.

Funding is available for a three-year PhD studentship from October 2008, for a largely qualitative research project which will involve close collaboration between the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham and the Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust. The proposed research will seek to develop an understanding of the views of South Asian parents about their children, and about their developmental disabilities. A detailed, culturally-sensitive, and systematic account of these views will allow us to understand their role in shaping the care of children. The project will allow us to better understand parents access to, and interactions with, service systems. As a result, we will be able to help South Asian carers to use services more effectively, and for services to adapt more effectively to the needs of this client group.

Research supervision will be provided by Dr John Rose and Dr Michael Larkin in the Clinical Psychology team. Dr Rose has a track record of conducting and supervising research in the field of developmental disability; Dr Larkin has a track record on conducting and supervising qualitative and phenomenological research in the area of culture and psychology. The successful candidate will join a 5* RAE-rated Psychology department with excellent facilities, established research groups, and substantial external funding. The School supports around 250 postgraduate students in professional training and research degrees.

The studentship requires an Honours degree in Psychology (2:1 or above); Enthusiasm for research, and commitment to producing and disseminating excellent qualitative research; Commitment to the wellbeing of people with learning disability, and their families; Good communication and organisational skills. Prior knowledge of qualitative or phenomenological psychology would be a considerable advantage, as would fluency in at least one South Asian language.

The studentship will be at the basic UK research council rate (expected GBP 12,600 per annum) to provide support over the three-year period, and will cover tuition fees. The student may also be eligible to contribute to our paid Teaching Assistant programme.

Approximately half of all the NOx released into the atmosphere is believed to be from vehicle emissions. NOx emissions cause acid rain, smog and respiratory diseases. Engines must run colder and less efficiently to minimise their formation. Both Otto and Diesel engines produce NOx which is removed by catalysts but for this to work, Otto engines must run at stoichiometric conditions and Diesel engines run under oxidising conditions, so no commercial NOx control catalyst is available. This project takes a new approach to NOx management using high temperature electrochemistry in which, if it is successful, the pollutant will be destroyed close to source.

We seek a candidate who is prepared to take a pioneering attitude to research, to learn new skills and techniques and to make a commitment to three years of challenging scientific research. The successful applicant for this position will join an active interdisciplinary research group in the Department of Chemistry and will work in close collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL.

The Goettingen Graduate School for Neurosciences and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) was founded in 2007 as a joint enterprise between the University of Goettingen, three Max Planck Institutes, and the German Primate Center. GGNB is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments.

The department is seeking candidates who are interested in pursuing research on the modeling and evaluation of national health systems, measurement of health system performance, design and evaluation of health interventions, health sector reforms, and human resource development.
The successful candidate will be expected to play a central role in the department's research and teaching, devoting a majority of his/her time to research in evaluation of health systems and programs. Overseas travel for fieldwork is envisaged.

Description of the Subject: Aggregate productivity growth is the outcome
of incumbent firms adopting new and superior techniques and (or)
entering firms replacing exiting firms with better technologies. This
research project will concern market selection mechanisms by
characterising innovation as a process of selection (or acquisition) of
more productive technologies within firms and a process of selection of
firms itself. It will analyse both what happens inside the firms and
what happens between firms on the market when firms are engaged in
innovative or imitative processes. The first part of the research will
be devoted to making a survey of empirical and theoretical analyses of
industrial dynamics, which should focus on the relation between
innovation and competition. The second part of the research will build a
theoretical model of industrial dynamics in order to analyse rivalry and
competition among heterogeneous firms. It will determine the market
conditions that allow firms to capture productivity gains from past
investments. These market conditions are critical to characterising the
dynamic equilibrium, similar to a so-called natural market structure.
The third and last part will consist in developing an empirical analysis
of the determinants of firms’ entry and exit, using French census data.
In its conclusion, this research will address critical issues concerning
the objectives and channels of industrial policies defined as policies
that support development of firms and innovation

Requirements: The successful candidate must be familiar with basic
economic modelling and econometrics (master level). Knowledge of English
is required. Proficiency in English and the willingness to learn French
are appreciated.

This is a PhD public scholarship for three years, starting from
September 2008 onwards, with an annual pay of 16,000 Euros before income
tax. The candidate will be hosted at CNRS/GREDEG and OFCE/DRIC. GREDEG
(CNRS and University of Nice Sophia Antipolis) is a research group in
industrial economics. OFCE-DRIC (www.ofce.sciences-po.fr/index-uk.htm)
is a department of the research centre in economics of Sciences-Po
Paris, a leading French higher education institution. The Department for
Research on Innovation and Competition (OFCE-DRIC), in association with
the GREDEG, studies a broad set of topics related to structural change,
innovation and trade. It has a strong emphasis on empirical approaches:
(i) for the analysis of economic performances of firms and countries
engaged in innovation processes or concerned with the entry in new
markets; (ii) for the evaluation of public policies (competition and
regulation policies, but also fiscal and banking ones). Its researchers
combine a good grasp of economic theory with various econometric methods
applied to firm and plant level datasets.

PhD Studentship description

This project evaluates the economic costs and benefits associated with
alternative management practises of Genetically Modified (GM) crop
technology. Specific research questions relating to the following issues
will be examined: (i) a comparison of the costs of co-existence accruing
to conventional crop producers and the potential benefits accruing to GM
adopting producers (ii) factors affecting farmer’s attitudes to GM
technology adoption and (iii) consumer willingness to pay for GM versus
non GM food end products. This study will provide valuable lessons for
policy by deepening our understanding of the economics of co-existence
of conventional and GM crop technology.

The PhD student will be based part-time at the Rural Economy Research
Centre, Teagasc and the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Business
Section, School of Agriculture, Food Science & Veterinary Medicine at
University College Dublin. There is also the possibility that the
student may spend a semester at a US university collaborating with
experts in the area of consumer willingness to pay studies in relation
to GM technology.

Requirements • Degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural
Science or related discipline • An interest in applied microeconomics in
particular agricultural or environmental economics • Excellent
quantitative skills.

The Legal Aid Chair was created by the Legal Aid Board and
will cooperate closely with the Legal Profession Chair and the Legal Aid
Management Chair. Research conducted by the Legal Aid Chair focuses on state
financed legal aid as a policy instrument to guarantee access to justice.
Politicians, academic researchers and legal aid providers have been preoccupied
by this theme for over fifty years in the Netherlands and abroad. At a
certain point in time, the Netherlands was thought to have the best legal aid system in the world. Still today, the
country enjoys a well-established and relatively comprehensive system. However,
the ideological enthusiasm of the legal aid movement has waned somewhat. From a
business perspective, providing legal aid is considered part of state policy.
The financial viability of the system - in times of prosperity and recession -
is a recurrent and as yet unresolved issue.

PhD project: towards an effective and sustainable legal aid system

The project focuses on the issue of which system or type of system would offer
the best prospect of a substantively effective and financially viable access
guarantee to justice.. To this end, studies into a number of largely similar
and/or contrasting legal systems are in progress, focusing on how the relevant
policy and legal issues are formulated. While design is an important premise,
actual implementation is considered in drawing up a list of strengths and
weaknesses for each system.

The mission of the World Bank Group is to reduce poverty and improve living standards through sustainable development and investment in people. The World Bank Institute (WBI) is at the forefront of the Bank's efforts to promote learning and deliver to the stakeholders, the best thinking and experience emerging from around the world on issues crucial to reform and socio-economic development.

In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP) for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank.

Through its management of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) and the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSM Fellowships), WBI supplements its training programs by providing opportunities for graduate study to promising professionals from developing member countries.

Since the inception of the Program, the Government of Japan has provided about 186 million dollars to the Scholarship Program. The Program's objective is to help create an international community of highly trained professionals working in the field of economic and social development. The World Bank and the Government of Japan require the scholars to return to their home countries on completion of their study Programs and apply their enhanced knowledge and skills to contribute to the development process in their respective regions and communities.

Starting in 1992, a number of Partnership Programs have been launched, largely to respond to the need for graduate study Programs which combine academic rigor with specialized training in the practical aspects of policy-making.
